It can be painful and embarrassing to chip a tooth. Perhaps you were on the wrong side of the softball. Maybe you ate something too hard or were in an unfortunate collision under the basketball hoop. Regardless of the incident, sometimes people, unfortunately, chip a tooth. We can help you take steps to cover your dental chip and keep your mouth safe.
What to do if You Chip a Tooth
The first thing you will want to do if your chip a tooth is to call our office right away. There is no permanent way to fix your tooth without seeing a dentist. Next, you will want to look for any pieces of your chipped tooth and wrap them in wet gauze to take with you to your dental appointment. Do not worry if you cannot find anything, often with a chipped tooth; it is nearly impossible to retrieve any parts of your tooth.
Finally, rinse your mouth with warm water to clean your mouth. If the edge of your tooth is now jagged, rough, or sharp, you will want to apply dental wax over the edge. This will protect your tongue. Be careful when you are brushing not to brush off the dental wax. If you do, spit it out and apply new dental wax to your chipped tooth.
Dental wax is helpful and easily available at a pharmacy. It is an over-the-counter item. It may be found in a dental kit if you do not see it sold separately.
