Signs You Need Root Canal Therapy
One of the most frustrating signs that you are in need of a root canal procedure is serious pain. While it is not unusual for patients to experience some type of tooth pain, it should not be ignored. The pain from an infected tooth will increase when you are eating or applying pressure to the infected tooth. The pain may also be severe enough that it keeps you from sleeping.
Discoloration of one or more teeth, along with gum inflammation could also be signs that you are in need of root canal treatment. It is important to note that there could also be no outward or immediate indication that your tooth is suffering from severe decay. This is just one of the reasons that it is important to maintain your schedule of routine checkups and professional cleanings every six months.
The Root Canal Procedure
Knowing what to expect from the procedure can help to reduce your anxiety about it. Once it has been determined that the best treatment direction is the root canal procedure, our dentist will ensure that you are comfortable. The tooth and surrounding gum will be numbed so that you feel no discomfort during your procedure.
Once you are completely numb and comfortable, the procedure will begin. The decay will be removed and the diseased pulp from inside of the tooth will be cleaned out. The inside of the tooth and root canals will be flushed clean and a disinfectant will be applied to remove all traces of the infection.
The interior will be packed with a biocompatible material that will serve to stabilize the remaining tooth structure. A small filling may be adequate to seal up the tooth. However, the recommended course of action is to fit the repaired tooth with a crown to offer it the protection and stability that it needs.
A temporary crown will be placed, while the permanent crown is being milled at the laboratory. It can take up to two weeks for the permanent crown to be ready for placement. At that point, you will return to the office. The temporary crown will be removed, and the permanent crown will be placed. Any minor adjustments will be made to ensure a good comfortable fit. The crown will then be cemented to the tooth.
Recovering From Root Canal Therapy
After your procedure, you may feel some tenderness in the area. This can be readily managed by over-the-counter pain relievers and by applying ice packs to your face, which will also serve to reduce inflammation. If you experience severe pain or a fever, it is important that you be seen by our dentist as soon as possible.
